For Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost on August 22, 2021

Isaiah 29:11-19 Ephesians 5:22-33

Mark 7:1-13

Traditions and Commandments

Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly,[a] holding to the tradition of the elders, 4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash.[b] And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.[c]) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” 6 And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;7 in vain do they worship me,

teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.” 9 And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)[d]— 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

LIFE TOGETHER

VISITORS: We are so glad you joined us today. We do collect offerings during our worship services. While we believe this is a chance for each believer to be a good steward of the gifts they have received from God, you are welcome but not expected to give an offering while you are our guest. If you would like to learn more about the Lord’s ministry here at Trinity please call Pastor Rutz.

He would love to get acquainted and visit at a time that is convenient for you. You are also invited to join members in the fellowship hall after the 9:00 service or prior to the 11:00 service for a time of fellowship.

Attendance Cards: Visitors and members are asked to fill out an attendance card and to list names of each family member in attendance. Turn in your card at the back of the church at the end of the service.

On Sundays when there is Holy Communion please list the names of those who will be communing on the Holy Communion registration side of the card.

If you have moved or your phone number or email address have changed, please note any changes on the attendance card so that we can update our records in the office.

Attendance via Livestreamed and You Tube Services: During this pandemic period, if you watch the Divine Service online and wish to have your attendance recorded, please call Linda at the church office 782-5095 or email her at

lhadley@trinitycreston.org and let her know the date of the service that you watched.

Private Communion Times: If you would like to take holy communion privately, please call Pastor to set up an appointment.

Weekly bulletins, announcements, and sermons continue to be available on the church website.

Offerings: For now, the offerings will continue to be gathered in the back of the church and will be brought forward during the offertory.

Children’s Bulletins that go along with today’s service may be found in a basket by the back pew (Creston).

Food and Fellowship, for all ages, at Trinity Creston on 2nd and 4th Sunday evenings at 6:00 p.m. Bring your lawn chair, finger food and a drink. If you have questions contact Becky Hagen. Please consider coming tonight, Aug. 22.

Lifelight Resumes September 13

Our LifeLight classes will resume on Monday, September 13, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday, September 14 at 1:00 p.m. You may attend either time, as the same lesson will be presented both days each week. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall for this nine-week in-depth Bible study.

We will be studying the second half of the Book of Luke, beginning with chapter 12. Jesus is on the way to Jerusalem. Our seminary professor, Arthur Just, has written: “Luke’s gospel is a book of the church, for the church, to be used by the church in its proclamation of the Gospel to the unbaptized and the baptized.” We hope you can join us for our always stimulating discussions. You do not have to have completed any LifeLight classes prior to this one. Mike Lang will lead the class.

For materials and information contact Mike or Janette Lang, 641-782-7922

HANDY HELPERS

Handy Helpers are not meeting this summer but will resume in September with a new day and time. They will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in fellowship hall in Creston.

*NOTE* Handy Helpers do not “quilt”. They need many hands to help assemble layers of fabric and tie them with heavy thread.

Or, you could do one of these tasks:

¨ Be the person who threads the needles.

¨ Cut fabric squares (at home or in the fellowship hall)

¨ Sew blocks or blanket topes together at home.

Please join us on September 15.
