August 5, 2018 The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

posted Aug 7, 2018, 11:13 AM by Linda Hadley

For the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost on August 5,  2018.

Exodus 16:2-15

Ephesians 4:1-16

John 6:22-35

I Am the Bread of Life

22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

                      LIFE TOGETHER

VISITORS:  We are so glad you joined us today.  We do collect offerings during our  worship services.  While we believe this is a chance for each believer to be a good steward of the gifts they have received from God, you are welcome but not expected to give an offering while you are our guest.  If you would like to learn more about the Lord’s ministry here at Trinity please call Pastor Rutz.  He would love to get acquainted and visit at a time that is convenient for you.

Mailboxes:  Every family has a mailbox in the narthex.  Please check it to see if you have any mail.  If your name is missing on a slot, leave a note in the office and we’ll get it fixed.

A 50th Anniversary Open House and card shower for Norm and Linda Schroeder will be held next Sunday, August 12, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 in the fellowship hall in Creston.  All are invited to attend.

Pastor on Vacation:  Pastor will be on vacation Aug. 9-17.    Mike Lang will lead Bible Class on Aug. 12.  Pastor David Kottlowski will lead the service in Creston and Pastor Dave Ericksen will lead the service in Mt. Ayr.

While Pastor is gone, in case of an emergency and  if in need of pastoral care, contact Pastor Keith Schweitzer (pastor at Immanuel Lutheran in Greenfield)  at 641-745-5143.

Calendar change:  The August 15 Church Council meeting has been cancelled.  The various boards will meet at their discretion.

4th Annual Miniature Golf Outing:  Keep the afternoon of Sunday, September 23 open for a time of fellowship, miniature golf, and food.  The Mt. Ayr members are inviting the Creston members of all ages to join together for some fun beginning at 3:00 p.m.   More details will be shared in August and September.

Bible Sale:  Concordia Publishing House  is running a Bible Sale until September 30, 2018.  If you are needing a Bible for yourself or as a gift you might want to check out the sale.  Go to and if you decide to order something you will need to use the promo code YFL to get the discount.  You could also phone in an order at 1-800-325-3040.    The items that are available are listed on a sheet that can be found on the table in the narthex.    If interested, feel free to pick up a sheet.

Higher Things provides daily devotionals which are good for teens and adults.  You may find them by going to and click on the link titled Today’s Reflection.   You can even subscribe to receive the free daily devotionals as emails.

The LWML is requesting donations for items of the Life Care Clinic Baby Bundles, which either gender can wear in newborn sizes. In June, when we met briefly, we voted to keep the bundles as an on going project for the Lutheran Women In Missions.  In order to do this, we need all of the following items (1) Diapers (2) Sock/booties (3) Long sleeved sleeper (4) Burp Bib (5) Onesies (6) Cap (7) Receiving blankets.    The long sleeved sleeper is the most difficult item to get, probably because it costs more than some of the other items.  If it is more convenient, a check can be made to the LWML and write Baby Bundles in the MEMO.  Checks can be  given directly to Maggie Dory at any time and she will shop for you.   A Bible, Prayer Book and Mustard Seed Devotion are also included in each bundle.   We sincerely thank all of you for the continued responses to the LWML and being able to Serve The Lord With Gladness.

Mission Prayer:  Lord, lay some soul upon my heart and love the soul through me, and help me humbly do my part to lead that soul to Thee.    Amen.
