February 3, 2019 The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany
Post date: Jan 31, 2019 6:14:39 PM
For the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany on February 3, 2019.
Jer. 1:4-10 (17-19) I Cor. 12:31b –13:13
Luke 4: 31-44
31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
38 And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.
40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
Jesus Preaches in Synagogues
42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

VISITORS: We are so glad you joined us today. We do collect offerings during our worship services. While we believe this is a chance for each believer to be a good steward of the gifts they have received from God, you are welcome but not expected to give an offering while you are our guest. If you would like to learn more about the Lord’s ministry here at Trinity please call Pastor Rutz. He would love to get acquainted and visit at a time that is convenient for you.
Attendance Cards: Visitors and members are asked to fill out an attendance card (found in the pew rack) and to list names of each family member in attendance. On Sundays when there is Holy Communion please list the names of those who will be communing on the Holy Communion registration side of the card. Hand the card to an usher.
Sunday Morning Bible Study: 8:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall. All are welcome to attend. The topic we are studying is:
The Augsburg Confession: Lutheran Doctrine and Practice Today
The Augsburg Confession is just as relevant to the life of the Church today as it was during sixteenth century Reformation.
Topics include but are not limited to:
Biblical marriage and the civil government
How to approach church fellowship with all Christians
The important roles of clergy and laity, according to Scripture
Reformation heresies we still see in the Church today
Persecution and terrorism.
Rachel Circle will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7:00 in the fellowship hall (CR). Maggie Dory will be the hostess.
Invitation: A bridal shower will be held honoring Heather Jensen, bride-to-be of Jeff Kruse. Jeff is the son of Kevin and Joyce Kruse. Please join us in the Trinity Fellowship Hall on Saturday, February 9, at 2:00 p.m. The couple is registered at Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and Walmart. Hostesses are Donna Scarlett, Jennifer Coffman, and Sadie Kruse, aunt, sister, and sister-in-law of the groom.
LifeLight Bible Study will begin Monday, February 11 at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday, February 12 at 1:00 p.m. Books are available on the table in the narthex. We will study the second half of the “Book of Acts.” Our focus will be on the activities of the Apostle Paul as he witnesses the Gospel in Asia Minor, Europe and Rome. Dr. Martin Luther wrote this about the Book of Acts: “…by this book St. Luke teaches the whole of Christendom...that the true and chief article of Christian doctrine is this: We must all be justified alone by faith in Jesus Christ, without any contribution from the law of help from our works.” For information and study materials, contact Mike or Janette Lang.
LUTHERAN WITNESS SUBSCRIPTIONS
Today is the deadline for signing up for Lutheran Witness subscriptions. New subscribers need to sign up on the sheet found on the table in the narthex. Current subscribers just need to let Linda know whether you want to renew or not so that she can get a list sent in to Concordia Publishing House on time.
Fellowship Hall Reservations Reminder: If you ever need to inquire about reserving Trinity’s fellowship hall, Mike Lang continues to be the contact person, as he has been for several years. Once a reservation is scheduled, then the information is shared to be added to the church calendar.
Valentine’s Dinner: The youth group will be hosting the annual Valentine’s Dinner on Sunday, February 17th, 2019 at 5:00, in Creston’s fellowship hall. The menu will be pork loin, cheesy potatoes, salad, and mini-cheesecake. Please sign up in the narthex in Creston by Feb. 10th. Mt. Ayr members may email Linda in the church office and your name will be added to the list. Cost is $15 per person. Proceeds go to the youth group to help with the cost of youth gatherings.
MOVIE NIGHT!! Everyone please put on your calendars if it is not already there, the night of Sunday, March 3 at 6:00 pm in the FH at Creston. All members from Creston and Mt Ayr are invited to an evening of fellowship and enjoyment to watch the movie, "Risen". This is a movie of about 1½ hours in length. You can bring a friend/guest and a snack to pass, but the snack is optional. Popcorn will be provided. Hopefully we can have a good turnout for this event. If there are any questions, you can talk with a member from the Mission Board.....Jean Stoll, Julie Rutz, Cathy Dryden, Deb Melzer or Maggie Dory.
