February 9, 2020 The Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

Post date: Feb 10, 2020 5:38:03 PM

For The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany on Feb. 9, 2020

For your own personal reading at home this week.

Isaiah 58:3-9a

I Corinthians 2:1-12 (13-16)

Matthew 5:13-20

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Life Together

VISITORS: We are so glad you joined us today. We do collect offerings during our worship services. While we believe this is a chance for each believer to be a good steward of the gifts they have received from God, you are welcome but not expected to give an offering while you are our guest. If you would like to learn more about the Lord’s ministry here at Trinity please call Pastor Rutz. He would love to get acquainted and visit at a time that is convenient for you. You are also invited to join members in the fellowship hall after the service for a time of fellowship.

Attendance Cards: Visitors and members are asked to fill out an attendance card (found in the pew rack) and to list names of each family member in attendance. On Sundays when there is Holy Communion please list the names of those who will be communing on the Holy Communion registration side of the card. Hand the card to an usher.

If you have moved or have a different phone number, or email address please note any changes on the attendance card so that we can update our records in the office.

Valentine’s Dinner: Trinity Youth Group will be hosting the annual Valentine’s Dinner on Saturday, February 15 at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall in Creston. The menu will be: lasagna, salad, breadsticks, dessert, and beverage and the cost is $15.00 per person. There is a sign up sheet on the table in Creston and Mt. Ayr members who wish to attend can email the church office at:

lhadley@trinitycreston.org and your name will be added to the list. Today is the deadline to sign up for a reservation for this meal. Proceeds will help fund various youth activities, including attendance at youth gatherings. If you have any questions speak to Jen Foglesong or Pastor Rutz.

Lutheran Witness Subscriptions (Renewals or new subscriptions) Today is the deadline for signing up for the Lutheran Witness, if you are interested. Linda will mail the list of names and addresses to St. Louis, for those who want to subscribe. To pay for your subscription, you may use the envelope from your offering envelope box labeled Lutheran Witness. The cost for a year’s subscription is $22.68.

LifeLight Bible Study will begin TOMORROW, Monday, February 10 at 6:30 p.m. and repeats on Tuesday, February 11 at 1:00 p.m. We will study the book of “Luke, Part 1”. Luke proclaims that he has carefully recorded the events of this inspired book as he has learned from “eyewitnesses” to the events. Dr. Martin Luther wrote this about the Gospels: “…The gospel, then, is nothing but the preaching about Christ, Son of God and of David, true God and man, who by his death and resurrection has overcome for us the sin, death and hell of all men who believe in him.” Please join us as we study God’s Word.

Trinity Preschool Fundraisers: Two different fundraisers will be coming up with proceeds going towards the purchase of a laminator for the preschool. The first will be Tips Night at Pizza Ranch on Wednesday, February 12 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The second one will be Burger/Fries Night at Hy-Vee on Tuesday, Feb. 25 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thank you for your support of Trinity Preschool as well as your continued prayers for them.

Naomi Circle will meet this Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at 1:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall for Bible Study and fellowship. Our topic will be “Why the Joy of the Lord is my Strength. This study is found on page 18 of the Winter 2019 Quarterly. Please join us for Bible study and fellowship.

Printed Sermons Now Available on the Website: Printed copies of the sermons are now available on the church website. Go to www.trinitycreston.org

In the left hand column look under Worship and you will see a category that says Sermons. Click on that. Then choose the date of the sermon you’d like to read. If you see a blank page first, keep scrolling down and the sermon should appear.

MISSIONS

The diaper drive for the Life Care Clinic continues through February. Last Sunday you received an insert in your bulletin with information about this project. If you did not receive one or need another copy there are some available on the table in the narthex. You may drop off donations at the clinic or place them in the basket in the narthex in Creston and someone will deliver them to the clinic for you.
