March 10, 2019 The First Sunday in Lent

posted Mar 8, 2019, 10:09 AM by Linda Hadley

For The First Sunday in Lent on March 10, 2019

Deuteronomy 26:1-11

Romans 10:8b-13

Luke 4:1-13

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” 5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’”

9 And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,  “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ 11 and “‘On their hands they will bear you up,

lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

 Life Together

VISITORS:  We are so glad you joined us today.  We do collect offerings during our  worship services.  While we believe this is a chance for each believer to be a good steward of the gifts they have received from God, you are welcome but not expected to give an offering while you are our guest.  If you would like to learn more about the Lord’s ministry here at Trinity please call Pastor Rutz.  He would love to get acquainted and visit at a time that is convenient for you.

Attendance Cards:  Visitors and members are asked to fill out an attendance card (found in the pew rack) and to list names of each family member in attendance.   On Sundays when there is Holy Communion also list the names of those who will be communing on the Holy Communion registration side of the card.   Hand the card to an usher.

Sunday Morning Bible Study:  8:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall.  All are welcome to attend. The topic we are studying is:

The Augsburg Confession: Lutheran Doctrine and Practice Today

The Augsburg Confession is just as relevant to the life of the Church today as it was during sixteenth century Reformation.

Topics include but are not limited to:

Biblical marriage and the civil government

How to approach church fellowship with all Christians

The important roles of clergy and laity, according to Scripture

Reformation heresies we still see in the Church today

Persecution and terrorism.

Pizza Ranch Tips Night Fundraiser for Trinity Preschool will be on Tuesday, March 12 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Creston’s Pizza Ranch.   All are invited to take a night off from cooking and dishes to help support this fundraiser.

Naomi Circle will meet this Wednesday, March 13, at 1:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.  Our topic will be Lord, I Can’t Handle This!” found on page 228 of the Winter 2018 Quarterly.  Please join us for Bible study and fellowship.

F.L.O.C. K. will meet on Wednesday, March 13 at 5:00.   This is for all the grades.  Note the earlier time so that they can meet before the 6:00 p.m. Lenten service.

Fellowship Time Following Lenten Services:  Starting the evening of Wednesday, March 13 there will be fellowship time after the 6:00 pm Lenten service.  Everyone is invited down to the fellowship hall for refreshments and fellowship.  There is a sign up sheet on the table in the Narthex for any group or individuals who would like to bring bars, cookies or cakes.  Several weeks still have openings.

Food Bank Collection—Next Sunday, March 17 is the third Sunday of the month and each month we collect food and other items for the local food pantry.   If you are able to bring any items for this collection you may place them in the box found below the table in the narthex.   You may bring items any week but they are usually delivered to the local pantry once a month.

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clarinda will be celebrating their 150th Anniversary on Sunday, Sept, 1, 2019.  A 9:00 service, lunch, and 1:00 service will be held.   An invitation card is on the table in the narthex.  If you would like to attend, RSVP information is listed on the card.
