Readings for The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost on October 1, 2017.

Ezek. 18:1-4, 25-32

Phil. 2:1-4 (5-13), 14-16

Matt. 21:23-27 (28-32)

23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

28 “What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.

MISSIONS

LWML SUNDAY: Today is Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) Sunday. Since 1942, the LWML has affirmed each woman's identity as a child of God and her relationship with Jesus Christ, encouraging and equipping Christion women to live out their lives in active mission ministries, and to support missions around the world through their sacrificial gifts of mites, tithes, offerings, and tireless service. Now is our time to "Be Ready to Confess! faithfully and boldly of Christ's redemptive work for us and for all the world."

Please join us after the service in the fellowship hall-we will be serving lots of yummy baked items and hot apple cider! There will be a craft and bake sale during this time as well. ALL monies collected for MITES will go for District and National Grants.

LCMS HURRICANE RELIEF: Next Sunday, October 8, we will have a special freewill offering for the hurricane and other disaster relief efforts that will be given through LCMS World Relief and Human Care. Checks may be made out to Trinity Lutheran Church but in the memo part of your check be sure to jot down that it’s for Hurricane Relief. One check from our congregation, as a whole, will be sent to support this mission project.

LC CLINIC BENEFIT CONCERT: A 2nd annual benefit concert for the LC (Life Care) Clinic will be held on Sunday, October 15 at 4:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church’s fellowship hall in Creston. Performing southern gospel music will be soloist Phil Hague and the group Ambassadors of Grace. A freewill offering will be taken to benefit the clinic. All are invited to attend.
