September 27, 2020 The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Post date: Sep 25, 2020 3:35:22 PM

For the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost on September 27, 2020

Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32 Philippians 2:1-4 (5-13) 14-18

Matthew 21:23-27 (26-32)

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.

LIFE TOGETHER

VISITORS: We are so glad you joined us today. We do collect offerings during our worship services. While we believe this is a chance for each believer to be a good steward of the gifts they have received from God, you are welcome but not expected to give an offering while you are our guest. If you would like to learn more about the Lord’s ministry here at Trinity please call Pastor Rutz.

He would love to get acquainted and visit at a time that is convenient for you. You are also invited to join members in the fellowship hall after the 9:00 service or prior to the 11:00 service for a time of fellowship.

Attendance Cards: Visitors and members are asked to fill out an attendance card and to list names of each family member in attendance. Turn in your card at the back of the church at the end of the service.

On Sundays when there is Holy Communion please list the names of those who will be communing on the Holy Communion registration side of the card.

If you have moved or your phone number or email address have changed, please note any changes on the attendance card so that we can update our records in the office.

Private Communion Times: If you would like to take Holy Communion privately, please call Pastor to set up an appointment. Common cup is also available to families or small groups upon request.

Attendance via Livestreamed and You Tube Services: During this pandemic period, if you watch the Divine Service online and wish to have your attendance recorded, please call Linda at the church office 782-5095 or email her at lhadley@trinitycreston.org and let her know the date of the service that you watched.

Weekly bulletins, announcements, and sermons continue to be available on the church website.

Guest Pastor: We thank Pastor Daryl Tompkins, from Clarinda, for sharing God’s gifts with us this morning. Pastor Rutz and family are in Fremont, NE this weekend celebrating the marriage of their daughter, Molly and John Knosp The wedding was held yesterday.

The Early Risers group will not meet this week. They will resume on Tues., Oct. 6 at 6:30 a.m.

MISSIONS

Gospel Music Program: Next Sunday, October 4, from 4:00-6:00 p.m., a music program of Gospel music will be held in the fellowship hall in Creston as a benefit for the LC Clinic. A freewill donation will be taken to benefit the clinic. The whole community is invited to attend.

Library: Don’t forget to stop by the church library and bookstore in the fellowship hall to check out the latest offerings. A selection of materials will also be available at the Mt. Ayr location beginning Sept. 27.

T-Shirt Orders: The Mission Board has designed a new Trinity Lutheran Church t-shirt. Sample shirts are available for viewing. If you are interested in ordering a shirt, please take an order form and turn it in to Julie Rutz, along with payment, no later than October 20.

Lutheran Hour: The Mission Board at St. John Clarinda is planning ahead so we may keep the Lutheran Hour on KMA radio at 7:30 am Sunday mornings. We encourage you to listen to the Lutheran Hour and pray that the Lord reaches many hearts and individuals through this broadcast. We also ask you to pray about supporting this ministry through a contribution.

It costs $100 a week or $5200 a year to broadcast this on KMA. St. John has a dedicated account for this purpose. A check may be sent to St. John with the listing in the memo line it is for the KMA broadcast of the Lutheran Hour. We encourage individuals, congregations, or groups in a congregation such as a Bible Class or LWML to consider this support.

May the Lord continue to bless the outreach of the Lutheran Hour by "bringing Christ to the nations and the nations to the church". From St. John Mission Board
