August 19, 2018 The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Post date: Aug 23, 2018 6:39:27 PM

For the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost on August 19, 2018.

Proverbs 9:1-10 Ephesians 5:6-21 John 6:51-69

51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” 66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

LIFE TOGETHER

VISITORS: We are so glad you joined us today. We do collect offerings during our worship services. While we believe this is a chance for each believer to be a good steward of the gifts they have received from God, you are welcome but not expected to give an offering while you are our guest. If you would like to learn more about the Lord’s ministry here at Trinity please call Pastor Rutz. He would love to get acquainted and visit at a time that is convenient for you.

THANK YOU: Thank you to all who sent cards and/or attended our 50th Wedding Anniversary Open House last Sunday. Special thanks to those who helped with serving and in the kitchen. Your nice wishes helped us have a happy celebration. From Norm and Linda Schroeder

PHOTOS: The 90th Anniversary Committee is looking for an enthusiastic individual or individuals who may be interested in taking some photos of members and gathering them into an informal little directory just to have for this year. Please contact Maggie Dory or Julie Lang if you might be interested in this project. Thank you!

EARLY RISERS will resume our regular Tuesday meetings on September 4 at 6:30 a.m. We will resume reading and discussing the Gospel according to St. Matthew. You are welcome to join us, either regularly or occasionally, for God’s Word, fellowship, coffee and doughnuts. No preparation is required for this Bible study. Feel free to drop in and feed on God’s Word. There is no charge. For information contact Mike Lang.

LifeLight Bible Study will begin Monday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, September 11 at 1:00 p.m. We will study the “Book of Acts.” Dr. Luther wrote this about the Book of Acts: “…by this book St. Luke teaches the whole of Christendom…that the true and chief article of Christian doctrine is this: We must all be justified alone by faith in Jesus Christ, without any contribution from the law of help from our works.” For information and study materials, contact Mike or Janette Lang.

Bible Sale: Concordia Publishing House is running a Bible Sale until September 30, 2018. If you are needing a Bible for yourself or as a gift you might want to check out the sale. Go to cph.org/biblesale and if you decide to order something you will need to use the promo code YFL to get the discount. You could also phone in an order at 1-800-325-3040. The items that are available are listed on a sheet that can be found on the table in the narthex. If interested, feel free to pick up a sheet.

Thank you! On behalf of the staff, congregations and church workers of Iowa District West I want to say thank you for your financial partnership during the second quarter of 2018. Your gifts, among other things, helped provide for our District convention at which delegates from all 172 congregations gathered to conduct business, worship, and hear how we are serving together in support of Christ’s mission. Thank you for your partnership in that mission! From President Steve Turner, Iowa District West

MISSIONS

The LWML is requesting donations for items of the Life Care Clinic Baby Bundles, which either gender can wear in newborn sizes. In June, when we met briefly, we voted to keep the bundles as an on going project for the Lutheran Women In Missions. In order to do this, we need all of the following items (1) Diapers (2) Sock/booties (3) Long sleeved sleeper (4) Burp Bib (5) Onesies (6) Cap (7) Receiving blankets. The long sleeved sleeper is the most difficult item to get, probably because it costs more than some of the other items. If it is more convenient, a check can be made to the LWML and write Baby Bundles in the MEMO. It may be given to Maggie Dory at any time. A Bible, Prayer Book and Mustard Seed Devotion are also included in each bundle. We sincerely thank all of you for the continued responses to the LWML and being able to Serve The Lord With Gladness.
