March 1, 2020 The First Sunday in March

Post date: Mar 2, 2020 4:42:21 PM

For the First Sunday in Lent on Mar. 1, 2020

Genesis 3:1-21

Romans 5:12-19

Matthew 4:1-11

The Temptation of Jesus

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Life Together

VISITORS: We are so glad you joined us today. We do collect offerings during our worship services. While we believe this is a chance for each believer to be a good steward of the gifts they have received from God, you are welcome but not expected to give an offering while you are our guest. If you would like to learn more about the Lord’s ministry here at Trinity please call Pastor Rutz.

He would love to get acquainted and visit at a time that is convenient for you. You are also invited to join members in the fellowship hall after the service for a time of fellowship.

Attendance Cards: Visitors and members are asked to fill out an attendance card (found in the pew rack) and to list names of each family member in attendance. On Sundays when there is Holy Communion please list the names of those who will be communing on the Holy Communion registration side of the card. Hand the card to an usher.

If you have moved or have a different phone number, or email address please note any changes on the attendance card so that we can update our records in the office.

New Bible Study – “Eyes On Jesus” Sunday mornings at 8:00am in Creston and 1st and 3rd Tuesdays in Mount Ayr at 6:30pm.

When the characters in the Passion narrative look at Jesus, what do they see? This series, based on the Gospel according to St. Mark, will examine how the various people around Jesus viewed Him—and how we should view Him. In most cases, people misunderstood who He is and what He was doing. In some cases, by faith, people recognized Him aright. Above all, we will “fix our eyes” on what Jesus has done to save us from our sins by His holy, precious blood and innocent sufferings and death, and celebrate what God sees on account of His work: our justification for His sake. Please join us! All are welcome from youth on up. Pastor Rutz

Handy Helpers Needed: The Handy Helpers meet in Creston’s Fellowship Hall the 3rd Tuesday each month 9:00-noon (with a coffee break). We do not “quilt” but “tie” layers of fabric together to secure; the edges are machine finished at home. Other home helpers are needed to cut and/or sew blocks for quilt tops; fabric provided. Finished quilts are donated to those in need. Please consider becoming a Handy Helper.

OWLS: Are you an OLDER WISER LAUGHING SOUL? “OWLS” is a group of ladies who meet at noon on the 4th Wednesday each month at a Pizza Ranch party room…..just an informal time for food, fun and fellowship. All are welcome to come!

Thrivent Choice Dollars: If you have policies or investments with Thrivent, it is the time of year to select recipients of your Choice Dollars. You have until the end of March to do so. Prayerfully consider Trinity Lutheran Church and/or Trinity Lutheran Preschool as you make your choices.

ILSTO note from the Iowa District West Office: The Iowa Lutheran School Tuition Organization raised just over $500,000 in 2019 that will be awarded for the next school year 2020-2021. With changes in the law, ILSTO will be able to raise $950,000 in 2020. We need your help to almost double our donations to help many more families attend Iowa Lutheran schools. Make a donation to ILSTO and receive a 65% Iowa tax credit. Call Dewey Torkelson at 712-260-2991 for more information.
