March 18, 2018 The Fifth Sunday in Lent

Post date: Mar 19, 2018 6:18:03 PM

For The Fifth Sunday in Lent on March 18, 2018.

Jeremiah 31:31-34

Hebrews 5:1-10

Mark 10: 32-45

32 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.”35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

LIFE TOGETHER

VISITORS: We are so glad you joined us today. We do collect offerings during our worship services. While we believe this is a chance for each believer to be a good steward of the gifts they have received form God, you are welcome but not expected to give an offering while you are our guest. If you would like to learn more about the Lord’s ministry here at Trinity please call Pastor Rutz. He would love to get acquainted and visit at a time that is convenient for you.

Lenten Suppers: All are invited to join together for supper at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, prior to the 7:00 p.m. Lenten Service. For this final Lenten supper for this year we will have a potluck. Bring a favorite food to share. All are welcome.

REMINDER: All members have a “mailbox slot” in the narthex. Check your box to see if you have any “mail”. If you can’t find your box or if the nametag has fallen off, please notify the office and we’ll get it fixed.

MISSIONS

The Mission Board would like to thank everyone who attended the luncheon and presentation on March 6 for missionaries, James and Christel Neuendorf. The weather wasn't real good, but the turnout was very good, considering the snow flying that day. There were 21 in attendance. The free will offering collected for them was overwhelming with $752.00. The Neuendorfs greatly appreciate all the support that Trinity continues to give them.

Used Portals of Prayer can be placed in the box located below the mailboxes in the Narthex. These will be distributed free next summer at the Iowa State Fair. Thank you.

CANS FOR CANCER: The Mission Board would like to thank all who have donated cans to the Cans For Cancer recycling box in the narthex. Every so often these cans are cashed in and then the money is saved and all monies then given to the American Cancer Society. Nothing is kept back to buy water or any other supplies for the Relay for Life in June. Thank you again for your continued generosity to this very worthy cause.

Our last Wednesday evening Lenten service will be on March 21. Before the service, a potluck supper for everyone will be held beginning at 5:30. Bring a favorite potluck food to share.
