SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT (February 24, 2013)

Witness

Men's work day - Saturday, April 27 - IDW is partnering with Lutheran Hour Men's Ministry on their national men's work day. Go to www.lhmmen.org to register your group. A great opportunity to gather men, including those outside the congregation, to do something to serve your community or those in need. You can identify a local project or, hopefully, we'll share soon information on a larger district project to which you can come and serve. If you have an idea for something that could be done in your area, please contact Mark Gerken at mark.gerken@idwlcms.org. ••

Why do we open up the Baptismal Font during Holy Communion? Simple, to remind you of your Baptism. Through it you were made God's child. You were marked with "the sign of the cross both upon your forhead and upon your heart, to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the Crucified." If you wish you can dip your fingers in the water and remember your baptism by retracing the cross on your forehead. ••

YOU’LL BE BLESSED LISTENING TO THE BIBLE STUDY now studying Luke’s Gospel: on your Lutheran Radio Station Worldwide KFUO, Weekdays from 10-11am CST. Pastors from congregations across the country give listeners an opportunity to study general and specific Biblical topics. The pastors explain specific verses and apply Lutheran doctrine to life in today’s world. Find it at www.kfuo.org --- live streaming on your computer, laptop, tablet, iPhones, smartphones, WiFi radio, and archived. Like and follow us: www.facebook.com/KFUORadio.

LERT Training Are you and/or your church prepared for a natural disaster? How do you respond when you or others in your community lose their home in a natural disaster? If the tornado siren sounds off during a church service, what will you do? Are your elders trained in how to respond? Do your members know what to do? Are your church records protected if a tornado destroys your church? Iowa District West is taking the lead in offering LERT (Lutheran Early Response Team) trainings so you will have the answers to these questions. You are invited to attend the upcoming Jefferson LERT training or call Ellie Menz at 515-370-1159 to schedule a LERT training in your community.

A thank you letter was received by the congregation for our support of Seminary Student Timothy Meyer. He is in his second year of Seminary. Classes are challenging but most rewarding. "A class I particularly enjoyed was 'Religious Bodies of America'. The class follows and examines the primary school of Christian religious thought and how they have developed throughout history. It was a fascinating class and have given me a much better understanding of the unique religious climate that Americans and we as Lutherans face today."

Did You Know: It’s been said the phrase, “Fear not”, or something akin to it, is repeated 365 times in the Bible. That is one “fear not” for every day of the year! Whether or not this is actually true, it is a great reminder to put our burdens on the Lord. He can handle them. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41: 9-11) Lutheran Family Service of Iowa Des Moines, IA (515) 251-4900
