THE ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (AUGUST 12, 2012)

Post date: Aug 7, 2012 2:08:52 PM

Exodus 16:2–15; Ephesians 4:1–16; John 6:22–35; Jesus Is the True and Living Bread from Heaven: Having rescued Israel “out of the land of Egypt” (Ex. 16:6), the Lord manifested His glory and made Himself known to His people. He fed them with “meat to eat” in the evening, and with “bread from heaven” in the morning (Ex. 16:4, 8, 12). But now, the “true bread from heaven,” which the Father gives to you, is the Son, “who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:32–33). Whoever comes to Him “shall not hunger,” and whoever believes in Him “shall never thirst.” He is “the bread of life,” who gives Himself to you as “the food that endures to eternal life” (John 6:27, 35). By the gracious working of God you believe in Him, by the calling of one Spirit through the Gospel, so that you also have “one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all” (Eph. 4:4–6). As you eat His one Body in the Holy Supper, so you belong to the one Body of His Church, in which you “are to grow up in every way into Him who is the head” (Eph. 4:16).

Mercy

Life Quote: “What would happen if each of us prayerfully purposed to tell at least one soul each day that Jesus is the One who has made us, who cares for us, who died and rose again for us, who blesses us with both physical and spiritual blessings, and who longs to live in a personal relationship with us? The Word calls us so to go and tell.” Pastor Jerry Moan, New Testament professor, Association Free Lutheran Theological Seminary, Plymouth, Minnesota – A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life · www.lutheransforlife.org

2012 Military Family Retreat (Part of Operation Barnabus) September 21-23 at Camp Okiboji. This retreat is for all military families who have recently had a family member return form deployment. Building Healthy Families: Did you know that the first week in August is National Simplify Your Life Week? Its’ proponents suggest that you do something each day this week to reduce the stress in your life and start enjoying life more. Books are written and TV shows produced that tell us how to de-stress and get organized. While these offer some excellent temporary ideas, our Father encourages us to find refreshment and lasting rest in Him. Find some time this week to take Him up on His invitation. Stewardship: Ephesians 4:1-16: St. Paul ends our Epistle reading with the instruction that, as members of the body of Christ, we have different gifts and abilities and the body grows and builds itself up as each part [each one of us] does its work. We are truly in the work of Christ’s church together.
