The Third Sunday in Lent March 15, 2020

For the Third Sunday in Lent on Mar. 15, 2020

Exodus 17:1-7 Romans 5:1-8 John 4:5-26

5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”

Life Together

VISITORS: We are so glad you joined us today. We do collect offerings during our worship services. While we believe this is a chance for each believer to be a good steward of the gifts they have received from God, you are welcome but not expected to give an offering while you are our guest. If you would like to learn more about the Lord’s ministry here at Trinity please call Pastor Rutz.

He would love to get acquainted and visit at a time that is convenient for you. You are also invited to join members in the fellowship hall after the service for a time of fellowship.

Attendance Cards: Visitors and members are asked to fill out an attendance card (found in the pew rack) and to list names of each family member in attendance. On Sundays when there is Holy Communion please list the names of those who will be communing on the Holy Communion registration side of the card. Hand the card to an usher.

If you have moved or have a different phone number, or email address please note any changes on the attendance card so that we can update our records in the office.

Youth Confirmation Class in Mt. Ayr will meet each Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. during March. This is a change in schedule from what was printed on the March calendar.

Handy Helpers Needed: The Handy Helpers meet in Creston’s Fellowship Hall the 3rd Tuesday each month 9:00-noon (with a coffee break). That makes this Tuesday, March 17 their next day. We do not “quilt” but “tie” layers of fabric together to secure; the edges are machine finished at home. Other home helpers are needed to cut and/or sew blocks for quilt tops; fabric provided. Finished quilts are donated to those in need. Please consider becoming a Handy Helper.

Lenten Services: Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m., in Creston. Youth Confirmation Class in Creston will be right after each service.

Youth Confirmation Class in Creston will not meet on Mar. 18 due to spring break.

Boards will meet after the Lenten service on Wed., March 18. The church council will not meet this month.

Altar Guild cleaning and polishing the Altar Ware and furnishings will be Saturday, March 21 at 9:00 a.m. Supplies will be provided. This important task usually takes 2 hours. We thank you for your help.

See you on the 21st.

Bible Study – “Eyes On Jesus” Sunday mornings at 8:00am in Creston and 1st and 3rd Tuesdays in Mount Ayr at 6:30pm.

When the characters in the Passion narrative look at Jesus, what do they see? This series, based on the Gospel according to St. Mark, will examine how the various people around Jesus viewed Him—and how we should view Him. In most cases, people misunderstood who He is and what He was doing. In some cases, by faith, people recognized Him aright. Above all, we will “fix our eyes” on what Jesus has done to save us from our sins by His holy, precious blood and innocent sufferings and death, and celebrate what God sees on account of His work: our justification for His sake. Please join us! All are welcome from youth on up. Pastor Rutz

OWLS: Are you an OLDER WISER LAUGHING SOUL? “OWLS” is a group of ladies who meet at noon on the 4th Wednesday each month at a Pizza Ranch party room…..just an informal time for food, fun and fellowship. All are welcome to come! Next lunch will be on Wed., Mar 25.

Youth Group: The youth group will be meeting on Friday, March 27 at 5:30 to travel to Des Moines for an Escape room adventure. If you have questions, contact Jen Foglesong.

Thrivent Choice Dollars: If you have policies or investments with Thrivent, it is the time of year to select recipients of your Choice Dollars. You have until the end of March to do so. Prayerfully consider Trinity Lutheran Church and/or Trinity Lutheran Preschool as you make your choices.

MISSIONS

Nashville TN tornado -- Mid-South District reported that the LCMS congregations in the affected areas escaped with only minor damage. However, there were members and workers whose homes sustained significant damage or were completely destroyed. To assist in the relief efforts, donations can be made to Iowa District West with 'Disaster Relief' in the memo and the donations will be sent to Mid-South District.

Iowa Flood Help: Many homes in Pacific Junction which were damaged due to flooding are still in the process of repair. Iowa District West volunteers will be working March 20-21 in a home. They need people who can hang drywall , people who can help keep the worksites picked up and organized, and people who will lend a listening ear. If you are able to help on either of those days, contact Ellie Menz at 515-370-1159 for more information.

Services in Creston are now live streamed: If you are unable to attend the services in Creston in person, you may watch the service live over the internet. We will be live streaming the services. To watch go to www.trinitycreston.org and in the left hand menu go to the section titled Worship. Below that, click on Live Service Stream. Each service is only available for viewing during the actual service time.

Printed sermons are also available on the church website. On the church website welcome page in the section titled Worship you will see the choice that says Sermons. Click on that. You may have to scroll down a bit if a blank sheet appears first. (For some reason it inserts an extra blank one sometimes.)
